ABOUT THE ORGANISATION AND THE ROLE

ASTRA Centre is an NGO offering sheltered employment for the intellectually disabled. Based in Gardens (Cape Town) the Centre provides a comprehensive service to members of the Jewish community who have special needs (intellectual disability and/or mental illness). Working in the various workshops, members produce a large variety of commercial arts, crafts and woodwork items for sale. We are looking to employ a creative workshop supervisor to manage one of our workshops.

MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Day to day running of the workshop, including activities for the beneficiaries and organising seamstress duties.
  • Coordination of contract work with clients
  • New product development and upgrading existing products.
  • Organisation of stock orders and co-ordination of the production process
  • Supervision of the beneficiaries and facilitation of various arts and crafts activities for them
  • Facilitation of various arts and crafts activities for the members.

REQUIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

The ideal candidate will have the following:

1. Work experience and industry exposure

  • Tertiary qualification Art or Design, advantageous
  • Passion for the creative and a background in arts and crafts, essential
  • Previous experience in teaching and design, advantageous.

2. Strong Communication and Interpersonal skills

  • Calm and patient, able to communicate well with people with disability and/ low cognitive function
  • Able to manage difficult situations and personalities in a calm and rational manner
  • Able to communicate effectively at a management level
  • Strong interpersonal skills, able to engage with a variety of people from different backgrounds and ages.

3. Excellent Administration and Organisational Skills

  • Highly organised and efficient individual who can multitask
  • Comfortable working in a flexible environment
  • Strong attention to detail
  • A self-driven individual who is able to work autonomously while maintaining open channels of communication with a team.

4. General

  • Reliable self-starter who is able to work independently.
  • Willingness to learn and improve, ability to accept constructive criticism and be a team player.
  • Hands-on approach to work.
