Treasurer – Cape Jewish Seniors Association (CJSA))
ABOUT THE ORGANISATION AND THE ROLE
CAPE JEWISH SENIORS ASSOCATION promotes the interests and well-being of Jewish Senior Citizens in the Cape Town community. The Association provides community centers, services and programmes to inform and engage with seniors and their families. It aims to also encourage social interaction among seniors.
The CJSA is now seeking a Treasurer to provide oversight and leadership on all financial concerns, who is responsible for financial oversight of the organisation as well as playing a role in strategic decision-making. This is a voluntary position. The ideal candidate needs to have a ‘heart’ for welfare and the desire to make a tangible difference by giving of their time & expertise.
MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Bring strategic, visionary, innovative and practical business ideas forward for Board discussion and make financial planning relevant and more broadly accessible
- Fulfil all legal and fiduciary obligations required of a director/treasurer as defined in King IV Code of Good Governance, Companies Act and other relevant documents.
- Act and communicate in a manner that is consistent with full Board decisions and authority and in the best interests of CJSA as a whole.
- Takes on leadership responsibilities, often chairing the finance or audit committee of the organization’s board
- Collaborates with other board and staff members and create meaningful reports.
- Keep track of financial projects and datasets at any given time and pay attention to detail, ensuring accuracy in their work.
- Play an active, strategic role in the organization, attending scheduled meetings, be fully prepared for and actively contribute to Board and committee meetings.
REQUIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
The ideal applicant will have the following competencies:
1. Experience and industry exposure
- Possess a sound grasp of principles of good corporate governance through experiential learning.
- Has a background in finance, accounting, auditing, or other related fields, as well as knowledge of how those concepts apply to nonprofits to ensure effective financial management, evaluation and regulation.
- No minimum qualifications, but ideally someone with CA (SA) and/or tertiary qualifications in accounting and financial management. A Chartered Accountant qualification is not a requirement.
- Experience in accounting packages and Microsoft Apps, in particular Excel.
2. Strong Communication and Interpersonal skills
- Clearly articulate ideas and positions.
- Strong communication skills, both oral and written
- An open mind to, and acceptance of, all beings and their views.
- Strong inter-personal skills with the ability to effectively communicate with people from all ages and stages of life.
3. Excellent Administration and Organisational Skills
- Strong attention to detail, especially numerically.
- Good knowledge of budgeting and resource allocation procedures
- Good knowledge of techniques for planning, monitoring, and controlling finances.
4. General
- Consistently maintain the highest levels of personal integrity, ethics, and industry-wide perspective.
- Maintain knowledge of current and potential future issues across business, political and financial services sectors that may impact CJSA; help to effectively manage issues which could impact it.
- No conflict of interest that may, or appear to, impair the nominee’s ability to represent CJSA interests and to fulfil the responsibilities of a Board member and Treasurer of CJSA.
