ABOUT THE ORGANISATION AND THE ROLE
The Cape Town Holocaust & Genocide Centre, the first Holocaust Centre in Africa, houses a permanent exhibition and conducts educational programmes for high schools, educators and diverse adult groups. They are looking for a passionate and dynamic educator to join their team.
MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Programme facilitation and development
- Facilitation of high school programmes
- Diversity Training and Adult Groups
- Facilitation of Teacher Training Workshops
- Development of workshop and curriculum support materials.
2. Public relations and education liaison
- Assist the Centre to establish good professional relationships with schools and with the Western Cape Department of Education.
3. Support with public events
- Attend CTHGC public programmes
- Assist with the logistics and take responsibility for such programmes as required.
4. Ad hoc educational support functions as and when required
REQUIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
1. Education
- A degree or diploma in history or education or a related field.
2. Work experience and industry exposure
- Atleast 2 – 3 years’ teaching or facilitation experience.
- Knowledge and experience of history teaching and methodology at High School level is a distinct advantage.
- Experience in educator training and / or the development of teaching materials and curricula is desirable.
3. Strong Communication and Interpersonal skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate well with a variety of audiences.
- Able to think on their feet and manage difficult situations and personalities in a calm and rational manner.
4. Excellent Administration and Organisational Skills
- A confident team collaborator who is able to work autonomously while maintaining open channels of communication with a team.
- A systems-oriented person who is able to multitask and work well under pressure to meet tight deadlines.
- Proactive self-starter, someone who uses their initiative to ensure that service and performance are always to a high standard.
- Accountable, responsible and reliable with strong attention to detail.
5. Specific Knowledge
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- A sound knowledge of the South African field of education with an emphasis on the High School curriculum.
- A sound knowledge of Holocaust History and education.
- Proficiency in Afrikaans would be a distinct advantage.
6. General
- A thirst for knowledge and an eagerness to grow.
- A customer-focused person with a calm disposition, able to stay levelheaded in stressful situations and lead under pressure.
- A commitment to human rights and human rights education.
