Mashgiach – UOS Cape Town
ABOUT THE ORGANISATION AND THE ROLE
The UOS Cape Town Kashrut Division supervises the production of kosher foods, overseeing manufacturers, products, and ingredients. They are going through an exciting time of growth and transformation and looking for new Mashgichim to join their team. The primary purpose of the Mashgiach is to ensure kosher compliance within the different kosher facilities which they supervise (these include retail establishments, butcheries, schools, functions / events, factories and wineries) in a world of Kashrut that is a continuously evolving industry.
This is a great opportunity for individuals looking for full time / part time / after hours or school vacation work to provide an invaluable service to the Cape Town Jewish community.
MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervision in any or all of the following: Retail stores, restaurants, events and functions, factories and butcheries which entails:
- Receiving and checking all ingredients
- Monitoring food production including kitchen appliances which require special kashrut attention
- Familiarising oneself with new and existing kosher products
- Overseeing kosher aspects at functions and events
- Filing reports.
REQUIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
Acting as the face and voice of the organisation, the ideal applicant will have the following competencies:
1. Work experience and industry exposure
- No previous work experience is required.
- No previous experience working in Kashrut required, international accredited training will be offered.
- Basic knowledge of the laws of kashrut.
2. Strong Communication and Interpersonal skills
- Strong inter-personal skills with the ability to effectively communicate with people from different backgrounds and different personalities.
- Collaborative individual who understands the importance of team-work.
- Presentable and self-driven person with the ability to handle public enquiries in a proactive, alert, engaged and energised manner.
- Punctual, reliable and committed with a strong work ethic.
- Open to learn and grow.
- Someone who is not afraid to ask questions and is able to ‘learn-on-their-feet’.
3. General
- Orthodox, Shomer shabbat and kosher observant
- Candidates have to be at least 16 years old, retired professionals welcome.
- Required to complete online Training and qualification through Association of Kashrus Organisations (AKO) is required – costs will be covered by the UOS.
- Committed to ensuring a high standard of service to the community and to our local manufacturers and industry.
- Own transport, recommended.
- Driver’s licence preferable.
