ABOUT THE ORGANISATION AND THE ROLE

Sinai Academy is an Independent International pre- and Primary school, registered with the WCED, situated in Blouberg, Cape Town. Aim of the school Sinai Academy aims to build each learner based on their strengths, pulling from pedagogies like Montessori and Reggio Emilio, while teaching the CAPS curriculum, alongside a rich Jewish Education. We keep our classes small and individualise each student’s educational roadmap.

This Junior Primary Jewish Studies Teacher (Grades 1–3) role in an Orthodox Jewish school, is responsible for delivering engaging, developmentally appropriate instruction within a multigrade classroom, aligned with the school’s Jewish ethos and prescribed curriculum.

The role includes teaching Jewish Studies; including Hebrew, Torah, and Jewish values, while supporting students’ academic, social, emotional, and spiritual development. The teacher must effectively differentiate instruction to meet diverse learning needs and create a warm, structured classroom environment. Collaboration is essential, as the teacher works closely with the General Studies teacher to ensure a cohesive approach to learning, and with the broader school community to support school initiatives and uphold shared values.

KEY ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead and Support Staff: Supervise assistants and interns; be part of team meetings, assist with substitution.
  • Support Students: Provide emotional and social support; build confidence and motivation.
  • Inclusive Teaching: Adapt teaching to meet individual needs; create a positive, engaging classroom
  • Assess and Report: Track student progress; complete termly reports; communicate with parents.
  • Ensure Safety: Maintain a safe classroom; organize outings; follow safety procedures.
  • Engage Parents: Meet with parents regularly; address concerns and keep them informed.
  • Plan and Teach Curriculum: Deliver lessons using the Jewish Curriculum at Sinai; plan units and activities to align with the General Studies Curriculum.
  • Work with Team: Collaborate with colleagues; attend meetings; support school events.
  • Stay Professional: Follow school policies; keep learning through training and self-evaluation.

REQUIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

1. Qualifications and Experience

  • A relevant teaching qualification
  • SACE registration is preferred, Sinai Academy can support this process.
  • Experience teaching in a Jewish school and a strong passion for Jewish education and curriculum e.g. kriah/ketiva/chumash/parsha/brachot/chagim (Chumash teacher training is available.)
  • A proven track record in teaching (3 years minimum).
  • Previous experience working with children in an educational setting, particularly in Montessori or Reggio Emilia is preferred.

2. Strong Communication and Interpersonal skills

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to effectively engage with staff, pupils and parents
  • A confident and outgoing individual who is friendly and accessible
  • Able to manage difficult situations and personalities in a calm and rational manner.

3. Strong Administration and Organisational Skills

  • A flexible, self-driven individual who is able to work autonomously while maintaining open channels of communication with a team
  • A proactive individual who uses their initiative to ensure service and performance are always to a high standard
  • Time and stress management skills, strong organisational skills and adaptability
  • Excellent computer skills, across a variety of devices and programmes including sound knowledge of the Google Suite.

4. Specific Requirements

  • The candidate must be an observant Jew: Shomer Shabbat. Kashrut, Mitzvot.
  • A progressive educational philosophy which promotes the diverse, holistic educational needs of pupils 
  • Self-motivation, with a sound work ethic, initiative and high levels of energy.
