ABOUT THE ORGANISATION AND THE ROLE
ASTRA is communal organization supporting members of the community with intellectual disabilities. They have numerous Group Homes, and are looking to recruit a relief houseparent to join their team. The incumbent would be responsible for overseeing the running of the home on the weekends. Weekends will be allocated according to the team roster.
MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Shopping and meal preparation
- Ensure that the house is equipped with everything required to maintain an established standard of living.
- See to the planning and preparation of all meals ensuring nutrition and kashrut standards are adhered to (training will be provided in this regard if necessary).
2. Transport

Transporting the residents where necessary to approved outings or appointments (using the organisation’s vehicle)
3. Care
- Overseeing the general well-being of the residents and reporting of any issues to the relevant Director/Social worker
- Care Administering of medication to residents
- Managing conflict within the house (where necessary) and supporting and encouraging independent living of the residents.
REQUIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
Acting as the face and voice of the organisation, the ideal applicant will have the following competencies:
- Matric is required, previous experience in a similar role is highly advantageous as is experience working with people with intellectual or mental disabilities.
- Ability to manage conflict in a sensitive and respectful manner.
- A good listener with the ability to communicate in a responsible way with a variety of residents.
- A supportive individual with empathy and the ability to set boundaries
- Comfortable working in an unstructured environment
- A confident team player who is self-driven and highly organized.
- A flexible individual who is able to work autonomously while maintaining open channels of communication with a team.
- Able to menu plan and cook is essential, knowledge or experience with kashrut is desirable.
- Able to manage a basic budget
- Drivers’ licence essential.
