ABOUT THE ORGANISATION AND THE ROLE

United by a vision for healthy, active, meaningful lives; Glendale home provides loving care, social, vocational, educational, residential, spiritual, financial, and healthcare services for Jewish adults and aged persons with profound intellectual disabilities. Established in 1966 and situated in the southern suburbs, the home cares for 41 adults between the ages of 24 and 81 years old.

The primary role of the Registered Nurse is to deliver a high standard of nursing care tailored to the specific needs of residents, ensuring their health, safety, and well-being. Responsibilities include clinical care, medication administration, compliance, training, and fostering collaborative multidisciplinary teamwork.

MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Clinical Care and Coordination

  • Monitor residents’ health, conduct physical assessments, and maintain detailed health records.
  • Provide direct care and nursing interventions, including palliative, chronic, and psychiatric care, as required.
  • Respond promptly to medical emergencies and make sound clinical decisions in high-pressure situations.
  • 100% compliance with required documentation and incident reporting.
  • Facilitate specialist referrals, appointments, and hospital admissions.
  • Document resolution of emergencies with minimal disruption to care.

2. Medication Management

  • Zero unresolved medication errors or stock shortages.
  • Administer medication accurately, adhering to safety protocols and documenting compliance.
  • Oversee and manage schedule 5 and 6 medications, including maintaining registers and conducting audits.
  • Address medication-related issues, liaising with pharmacies and healthcare providers to ensure availability and accuracy.
  • Proactively monitor changes in treatment plans and manage stock shortages.

3. Preventive and Holistic Healthcare

  • Drive wellness initiatives, including regular health screenings, early risk identification, and resident wellness programs.
  • Ensure proactive infection control practices across both homes.

4. Compliance and Quality Assurance

  • Maintain accurate clinical and administrative records, ensuring alignment with organizational and regulatory standards.
  • Participate in quality assurance processes, including internal audits and performance reviews.
  • Adhere to Department of Health (DoH) and Department of Social Development (DSD) compliance requirements.

REQUIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

The ideal applicant will have the following competencies: 

1. Educational Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (or equivalent) is essential.
  • Registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC).

2. Work experience and industry exposure

  • Minimum 5 years of nursing experience, including clinical and management roles.

  • Experience in residential or community-based settings (advantageous).
  • Familiarity with MDT frameworks and dual-diagnosis care (advantageous).
  • Valid BLS is essential, ACLS (advantageous).

3. Strong Communication and Interpersonal skills

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication, engaging effectively with residents, families, and healthcare professionals.
  • Leadership qualities, including assertiveness and the ability to inspire teams.
  • Empathy, patience, and a warm demeanour, especially for non-verbal residents.

4. Organisational and Administration Skills

  • Strong organizational abilities to manage multiple priorities efficiently.
  • Expertise in nursing logistics, including schedules, stock management, and compliance documentation.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and electronic health record systems.

5. Specific Requirements

  • Clean Criminal Record.
  • Knowledge of intellectual and psychiatric disabilities and behavioural management strategies.
  • Proficiency in supporting therapeutic interventions and non-verbal communication methods.
